Shoju-in Temple (風鈴寺)

Located in Ujitawara, which is approximately 15 to 20 minutes away from Wazuka, Shouji-in was constructed approximately 800 years ago. This temple belongs to the Koyasan Shingoshu sect of Buddhism.

Throughout its long history, the temple was recorded to have caught fire twice. Once during the Sengoku Period (1467-1615) and another during the Edo Period (1603-1868). The temple was also rebuilt once in 1596.

Shouji-in's principal image is an eleven-faced Kannon statue has been designated as a local cultural property and is only available for public viewing once every 50 years. In the summer, the annual Wind Chime Festival is held from 1st July till 18th September. Over 2,000 wind chimes are hung in the temple.
