About Genmaicha
Genmaicha
Genmaicha is a comforting tea made from a blend of tea leaves and roasted rice. Commonly known as the "people's tea" or "popcorn tea," the roasted rice adds a pleasant, toasty aroma.
Genmaicha is naturally lower in caffeine compared to other Japanese teas (15mg/150ml) and is cheaper due to tea leaves being blended with rice. It is thus commonly enjoyed in Japanese households on a daily basis.
Nowadays, there exists many types of genmaicha blends, ranging from Matcha-Genmaicha (where the blend is dusted in matcha powder) to specialized versions using Hojicha or Gyokuro bases. However, the most common versions simply use roasted rice and bancha.
The 50/50 Recipe
Genmaicha is made from a blend of rice and tea leaves - about half of it consists of roasted rice. The word genmaicha itself is formed of two parts: "genmai," a Japanese unpolished brown rice, and "cha" for tea. Nowadays, most genmaicha use white rice instead, as it easier to properly steam and roast.
