Sustainable agriculture: Cultivating pesticide-free brown rice

This year we started with the cultivation of pesticide-free brown rice for the first time!

The rice fields that we worked on are located in the Yubune region of Wazuka Town, Kyoto Prefecture. This is also where the majority of our tea fields are located.

We first planted the rice seedlings in April. Unlike tea harvests however, rice is only harvested once a year. Usually towards the end of summer and during the days when there is a lull in the intensity of the typhoon season.

One of the most challenging parts of the process was the overwhelming presence of weeds, the team banded together every Sunday morning to clear as many as we possible could.

When the time came to harvest, Daiki-san took on the task of learning how to operate rice harvesting machine. The rest of us provided as much support as we could to ensure the harvest was completed on schedule.

The cultivation of brown rice was definitely an enriching experience. Furthermore, despite only working with three plots of rice fields, the landscape of the region felt different with that slight tinge of gold.

Needless to say we are excited to bring to you more unique products that incorporate the best aspects of Japanese green tea and brown rice. All of which were grown and produced right here in Wazuka Town.

Our genmaicha will soon be made with all crops grown and cultivated by d:matcha Kyoto.

Did you know?
The term "ear" is used to refer to the part of a cereal plant that bears the grains. In addition to rice, this includes plants such as barley, wheat, maize, or rye.
