Vegan Uji matcha tiramisu

A special d:matcha beau-tea sweets feature by Natsuki.

---

Hello,

This is Natsuki and I've recently been researching on ways to incorporate matcha into my beauty routine! This section will thus feature sweets that not only have matcha as an ingredient, but are also delicious and good for your health~

Today's dessert is: Vegan Uji matcha tiramisu! Made primarily with tofu and avocado, the recipe is easy and can be completed in 30 minutes. Furthermore as eggs, milk, and cheese are not used, this tiramisu is ideal for those who are vegan or calorie conscious. o(*^▽^*)o

What is "vegan" and is it delicious?

Those who follow a vegan diet typically do not consume any meat, dairy products, eggs, or products that are sourced from animals. Much like those who follow a vegetarian diet, vegans have a primarily vegetable-based diet.

The term vegan was first coined 70 years ago with the aim of improving the food industry, especially when it came to livestock cultivation. This lifestyle is an alternative for those who seek to live without directly or indirectly using products that are made from animals. Sometimes the choices extend beyond food to clothing as well.

There has been scepticism on whether vegan sweets can be delicious due to the absence of eggs or butter. Vegan desserts however, sometimes use substitutes such as avocados or bananas and this actually makes the treats not only healthier but as delicious!

Naturally I would propose using d:matcha's matcha as it is a rich source of dietary fibre and vitamin C. The richness of cheese you would typically find in a tiramisu can be replicated with avocado and tofu. Now let's get started with making a healthy tiramisu that you can easily make at home! I'm sure you'll want to eat this every day ♪

List of Ingredients (Approximately five cups)

Matcha cream:

・2 ea - Avocado

・4 tbsp - Maple syrup

・1 tbsp - Coconut oil

・3 tbsp - Matcha

・1 pinch - Salt

Tofu cream (Base):

・300g - Silken tofu

・2 tbsp - Maple syrup

Topping (Optional):

・Crushed almonds/nuts of your choice

Instructions

① To first make the tofu cream base place the silken tofu and maple syrup into a food processor. Mix until the ingredients are well blended into a smooth paste. (Pictured above)

② Evenly divided the mixture among the five cups. Allow the cream to set.

③ Being preparing the matcha cream. With the exception of the coconut oil, mix all the ingredients for your matcha cream into a food processor. Once again mix until everything is smooth and well blended. (Pictured above)

④ Adjust the taste of the matcha cream by adding in the coconut oil.

⑤ When your matcha cream is ready, add it to your cups prepared in step ②. We usually recommend adding an equal portion of tofu cream and matcha cream to each cup.

⑥ Gently sprinkle matcha powder on top.

⑦ Finally, top your tiramisu with your desired amount of almonds!

Please note that in the pictures I used honey, which may not be considered a vegan product! Please use

Taste test!

I decided to give this recipe a try at work, and made it during our lunch break. We all ate the tiramisu together during snack time and everyone had the same response: the richness of the tofu cream and avocado cream combined together was absolutely delicious! (*^▽^*)

When well mixed, the tofu cream was so smooth and had the same consistency as cream cheese. Furthermore, the intensity of the avocado complimented the gentle taste of the tofu brilliantly. The tiramisu was neither too sweet nor too rich. I could definitely imagine myself eating it every day!

Benefits

An avocado is extremely rich in the following nutrients:

  • Oleic acid - Proven to be effective in reducing bad cholesterol
  • Vitamin E - Beneficial in improving rough skin and promoting cell metabolism rate
  • Vitamin C - Helps with fatigue recovery and has a whitening effect on skin
  • Dietary fibre - Prevents constipation
  • Folic acid - Recommended for expecting mothers or those with anemia

In addition to avocado, coconut oil is also touted for its beneficial properties. The lauric acid found in coconut oil. which is a medium-chain fatty acid has properties that allow it to reach the small intestine without passing the liver. In other words, this means that coconut oil has a harder time accumulating as body fat, making it easier to be absorbed as energy by the body. Furthermore, coconut oil is also rich in vitamin E. Overall regular consumption can improve one's diet, sensitivity to cold, intestinal regulation, skin condition, as well as metabolic function. Even famous stars like Miranda Kerr, who is well-loved for her fashion sense, is also a fan of the beauty effects of coconut oil!

Last but certainly not least, matcha has also it's own redeeming beautifying effects! Our beloved green powder is rich in:

  • Vitamin C
  • B-carotene - Converted to vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A is an essential nutrient that helps to keep the skin moisturised and maintain the skin's elasticity.
  • Catechin - Has antioxidant effects, which are essential for beautiful skin.

Final verdict

I personally feel that matcha is extremely compatible with making desserts, and can be easily added to a variety of sweets. If you would like to mix things up, I would also recommend using houjicha!
