Shoju-in Temple (風鈴寺) Apr 15, 2022 Located in Ujitawara, which is approximately 15 to 20 minutes away from Wazuka, Shouji-in was constructed approximately 800 years ago. This temple belongs to the Koyasan Shingoshu sect of Buddhism. Throughout its long history, the temple was recorded to have caught fire twice. Once during the Sengoku Period (1467-1615) and another during the Edo Period (1603-1868). The temple was also rebuilt once in 1596. Shouji-in's principal image is an eleven-faced Kannon statue has been designated as a local cultural property and is only available for public viewing once every 50 years. In the summer, the annual Wind Chime Festival is held from 1st July till 18th September. Over 2,000 wind chimes are hung in the temple. More recently, the 猪目窓 (inome or heart-shaped window) located in the side-hall has gained popular for its picturesque view of the temple's garden. Depending on the season you visit, you are bound to be greeted with a scenery that is both soothing to the eyes and soul. This heart shape is also a traditional Japanese pattern that is believed to bring happiness and avert disaster for the viewer. The ceiling of the side temple is also adorned with paintings that date back to almost 300 years ago. The total of 160 paintings was drawn with the anchoring theme of flowers and Japan's beautiful landscape. Guests are welcome to take the time to soak in the view on the cool tatami mats. You can see their beautiful Japanese garden through the window and the various scenery on each season can be enjoyed.
