Beth's Tea Journey

My internship at d:matcha has been an invaluable experience, connecting my passion for sustainability with a deeper appreciation for Japanese culture. During March, a busy tourist month, I had the opportunity to work and engage in interactive farm tours, allowing me to connect with people from all across the world all drawn to d:matcha for their love for tea and nature. These tours helped me gain a better understanding of the thoughtful approach here regarding organic farming and the global importance of tea. Living in Wazuka I have observed firsthand how tea connects this rural community and it is deeply valued here.

Spending time working on the farm with a small team was one of the highlights of my internship. Surrounded by the stunning rural scenery of Japan we did lots of farming! After helping fertilize various cultivars, I developed a deep appreciation for both the land and the intricate effort and process behind every cup of tea.

A standout moment of my time at d:matcha was visiting Shigaraki, a town renowned for its ceramics. There, I learned about the artistry and tradition behind the pottery displayed in the d:matcha shop. Just like tea, these ceramics tell stories and represent a piece of Japan’s cultural heritage.

I also shared this experience with two other interns, Lizzy and Emma. We formed a close bond over our shared love for tea and the outdoors, as well as the comforting role of tea in our everyday lives. We spent time together on the farm, enjoying tea and bonding with the d:matcha team. These connections made my time here even more special. I have truly loved being part of the d:matcha family, and I will always remember this month fondly. I am very grateful for my new Shigaraki matcha bowl that will  serve as an everyday reminder of my time here.
